Here’s a basic breakdown of the Imagers from Microscan. The Mini and the MS-4 are tiny but if you have low contrast symbols, the EZ has the horsepower to read those direct part markings. If you need more help choosing the one that fits your application, contact us.

How to use I/O with 5 volt MS-3

To make the Microscan MS-3 act like a 24 volt scanner use the IC332.

Other than the old IB 150 that came out with the 710, there's not a Microscan solution to use a photoeye or use the TTL outputs with the USB or Keyboard wedge/RS232 cable Microscan provides.

See the image for a way to build a cable in between the MS-3 and the Host cable to integrate a trigger or connect to I/O

How to get a 5th preamble or postamble character

An advantage of Microscan scanners is the ability to have 4 preamble and/or postamble characters added to your data. Most scanners only allow 1 or 2.

What if you need 5 or more?

In the 860, EZ, 880, and the Quadrus Mini you can use the data output formatting function. Insert the characters you need for the preamble, extract the bar code data, and then insert the characters you need for the postamble.

any Questions?

How to set continuous read 1 output to infinite

If you don't use any type of trigger and you only want to get the data from a label 1 time, you can set the read cycle of the Microscan scanner to continuous read 1 output and set the time to an interval where the label should be gone. But what if the label is parked under the laser for a time longer than you specified?

Set the time to 0 seconds and this will be interpretated as infinite. This works on most Microscan scanners. This won't work if all your bar codes are the same because it will think it's the same bar code.

Wire colors for 61-000011-01 820 cable

In case you need to modify the cable to use for a Microscan 860/Quadrus EZ/880, you can use this color diagram to keep from having to ohm out the cable yourself.

Reading Dot Peen Datamatrix after Chrome Plating

Use the Microscan Quadrus EZ to calibrate and read the chrome plated part.  The Quadrus EZ must be at an angle of 45 degrees in order to achieve the correct lighting.

Conifgure the Microscan slave for Daisy Chain

The conditions for a daisy chain application are as

follows:

1. The master reader’s trigger must be Serial or

External; the secondary readers’ triggers are

configured for Serial.

2. All readers are enabled to Daisy Chain

mode.

3. Each reader’s auxiliary port must be connected to the Host port of

its secondary reader.

4. Each secondary reader in the daisy chain must be set to send its

data no less than 20mS before its preceding reader.

5. All but the master reader must have Postamble enabled and set to

CR (^M) only.

6. All but the master reader must have their noread messages disabled.

7. If Multisymbol is enabled, Multisymbol Separator characters

must match in all readers and Number of Symbols must be set to

number large enough to include all the symbols it may itself read

plus the number of symbols that it will be expected to relay to the

host or the next reader up the line.

8. Symbology ID enable/disable must be the same in all readers.

9. All but the master reader must have their diagnostic warning messages

disabled.

10. Daisy Chain ID Status enable/disable and the number of characters

in Daisy Chain ID must be the same in all readers.

How to use a hand scanner to program the new master

Microscan bar code scanners have an auxiliary port in which you can configure to be in command processing mode.

This mode allows you to send data from a hand held scanner to program the new master.  Set up the preamble to be <M1, and the post amble to be >

This will program the new master.

In a daisy chain application the aux port is used by the slave scanner.  Connect the Tx pin on the hand scanner to the Rx of the host port of the Master scanner.  This will program the new master

Calibrating on Composite Codes with the Quadrus EZ

I’ve found it much easier to calibrate on the RSS portion of the composite code using the Microscan Quadrus EZ Then, enable Micro PDF and set the composite setting to required. Using the calibrate procedure on its own usually doesn’t find the Micro PDF

Fixed symbol length on the Microscan 860

I ran into a problem today where I had Code 128 enabled on the Microscan 860 the fixed code length enabled and set to 11 characters I also needed code 39 enabled with the fixed code length disabled. The Microscan 860 would not read a 7 character code 39 but would read an 11 character code 39.

As soon as I disabled the fixed code length on Code 128, I was able to read any code 39.

How to read the Molex traceability pad with the Microscan MSQ

The Molex traceability pad is an innovative way to use the current pick and place hardware in PC board manufacture to apply a datamatrix traceability bar code.

To read this bar code with the Microscan hand held follow the steps below.
Get the MSQ Quadrus with High Resolution lens
Put the scanner in basic mode
Install the 100 series LRO
Scan the 100 series Illumination bar code
Set the VGA mode to SVGA

How to use the Microscan 880 as an area scanner

Area scanners are very expensive and are diffucult to maintain and setup.

The Microscan MS880 is such a versatile scanner and can read 5 mil linear bar codes from as far as 20" away.

Use the database and calibrate on the label farthest from the scanner and load the settings into the database. Move the laser to the next bar code and calibrate and add to the database if necessary.

Use the laser framing feature to set the width of the laser and the raster pattern for each bar code. Record the settings.

Use a VB app to send the serial commands to the MS880 to read each bar code.
