Make Your Own Camera Definition Files For GigE

Say you have a 1392x1080 GigE camera and you don't need all the 1080 in the Y direction plus you need it to be faster. Editing the standard camera definition file and creating a new one for that camera may work.
You can change the parameters by the arrows in the image to fit your application.

This example starts at row 180 and goes to row 380 and gives us an image that's 1392 x 200 pixels.

It is possible - thanks to Microscan Visionsupport for this tip to rename the GigE camera to something more meaningful than GigEVision1.

In the c:\vscape\DM folder there is a file called DM.config. Open it in Notepad or something and change the device name where shown on the image and save it.
This assumes you've already connected to the camera previously.

UID DOD verifier for large Datamatrix codes

Microscan has two standard products for UID verification to DPOD spec, the LDP and the DPM verifier. They feature builtin reports and are a great stand alone verification setup that you just plug in, start the PC software and start grading bar codes.

A limitation of the standard verifiers is that some codes can be too large for these 2 verifies therefore not leaving enough quiet space for a passing grade.

We've over come this by using a Hawkeye 1510 verifier with UID report capabilities. Combining the verifier with appropriate lensing and lighting, creates an LDP verifier that can read larger codes.

870 Reads UPC and Sends Match String to 830's Reading GS1

This application requires bar code matching of a single unit UPC bar code and then matching it to front and back case labels.

We utilize our customized MSConnect 210 with latching relays for a buzzer, Stacklight, Dry contact output. A simple reset button starts it back up.

The GS1 code has part of the UPC code embedded into it. A momentary key switch programs the new master into the QX870 for it to read the UPC code. The QX870 then sends at match string to 2 QX830's. All 3 scanners send commands to the MS Connect for pass/fail.

Match Code Start Position Feature

To Match a string of characters within a bar code but not the whole string, the actual match code string must be the same length - thanks Help Desk!

For Example

If you have a 14 digit bar code that is NNN1111057NNNN and you only want to look at 1111057, the match code that is stored/taught to the scanner must be 14 characters so teaches the scanner. says start at character 4 and compare the next 7.

We're having a reader upstream send the match string to the 870. The Matchcode output string will actually fire output 1 for a Match and output 3 for a Mismatch

HS-1 Scanner how to get an Enter for postamble

If your scanned bar code shows up like this

1 2 3 4 5 6 or 12345 with an extra blank line beneath it, the postamble needs changed. The default in the HS-1 is CRLF but you need to send it so the postamble will be Enter instead of CRLF.

Check out this image of a laser etched code. The code is etched up against the printed box making it tough for most readers. The laser marking has drifted from the center. But at the right distance, the printed box can get washed out a little and the codes can be read.

This code is on an expensive part which must be scrapped if it can't be read.

Hardware default for HS-2 handheld

We've had really good luck with Microscan's HS-2 reader. We've found it to decode very fast and read some codes that aren't so good. Also, its interface with Microscan's ESP software has been pretty robust compared to the MSQ.

However, I had ESP crash while downloading to the reader and it got locked up and wouldn't read any default bar codes. We had to perform a hardware reset as described below.

Unplug the HS2 from the USB port
Hold down the trigger and plug it into the USB port
Wait for 5 rapid beeps and then release the trigger
Hold down the trigger again for about 5 seconds
The reader will vibrate then release the trigger
It will beep a few more times but will then be reset

Microscan Mobile Hawk with Maxlite

A cool feature with the New Mobile Hawk hand held DPM reader from Microscan is that it can tell you which light setting you used to decode the bar code.

Just hover over the code and a window will pop up as shown in the image at the left. You can store multiple light settings to read your code but the fastest way is to know the 1 setting you need.

The reader has read every code I've put in front of it so far. I've found it to be much lighter than the Dataman 7500 and it doesn't require a power supply to run on USB.

We recently finished integrating a Microscan Quadrus Mini Velocity with Blackware's Control Software for Industrial Inkjet Printers.

Their system uses an encoder to track the cam revolutions and documents on an envelop stuffer. It sends a 24 volt pulse to the Velocity and the Velocity reads the datamatrix code or IMB and sends the data to their Controller via RS422 and onto a PC that matches the data to an address in a database.

Blackware can communicate to complex high speed inkjet printers like Scitex. We built some custom cabling for the RS422 and to receive a 24volt trigger signal. A few key reader settings were also critical. For more info, please contact us

Hawkeye 1600T How to Connect a Photoeye

To connect a Photoeye: The "Sensor Inputs" (pins 6&7) are bi-polar, meaning they can be either (+) or (-), the both go to a circuit that just checks for a difference between the two.

The Photo eye can get its power from pins 4 (+24V) and 8 (- GND)
Trigger pin 6

So, in order to trigger:

you should connect 6(inA) to 4(+24V) and switch 8(GND) and 7(inB) = (NPN - sinking)

OR
Connect 8(GND) and 7(inB) and switch 6 (inA) and 4(+24V) = (PNP - sourcing)

There is a better illustration on page A-2 of the manual and the note 2 is:
Bipolar isolated camera sensor trigger:
– Logic 0: 0 to 5V
– Logic 1: 15 to 30V

Hawkeye 1600T I/O Cable Example

The Hawkeye line of products that was aquired last fall by Microscan has a smart camera model 1600T. We recently received our Microscan branded unit and have begun looking for applications and building a more meaningful demo kit.

The 1600T doesn't come with a breakout board to connect a trigger signal or output signals like some cameras but has all the I/O coming out of a cable.

Along with Microscan-Renton's help, we were able to translate the terminology and come up with a workable I/O scenario.
Using mating Turc style connectors we're able to make the Trigger and Power work in a more common fashion and add LED's for the discrete output signals.

How To Retrieve Individual Match Codes from MS 890

The manual has <k231,1?>to retrieve the match code in place 1. This works on the MS 880.

Microscan has released a new feature for decoding bar codes called Q Mode. $100 option now available on the Mini, Mini 3, and Velocity.

It allows the enabled reader to decode images using fewer pixels per element than standard mode with a clean background around the code.

I've seen it actually take 3 times as long to read a 10mil datamatrix code as standard mode with a clean background around the code.

I'm sure it depends on the application.

When Q Mode is enabled, a few more features are turned off: which include multisymbol, large intercharacter gap, BC412, and I 2 of 5 border bar.

Postal codes work only in Q-Mode.

We recently had this loaded onto some 860's in this situation and had great success.

As a rule, you want to avoid quiet zone problems but it's good to know that when the label format is inflexible you still have a solution.

Microscan's latest product, the Mini Velocity is another addition to the Mini family.

The Velocity has a different shutter that allows for capture of products in fast motion. - 100 inches per second.

We've tested it at 100 fpm and 4.5 inches away very successfully capturing the entire field of view. I believe external lighting would be needed for faster speeds.

The Velocity is the first Mini to feature Q-Mode, a new Microscan decoding algorithm, which allows datamatrix decodes down to 1.5 pixels/element.

Using the Microscan Quadrus Mini 3 and a host software application, we've developed an inexpensive method to read up to 96 unique datamatrix codes on vials in an approximately 3x5 tray.

Microscan 890 No Data Output or Beep on Calibration Screen

We came across this situation this week trying to read a bar code in the calibration screen of Microscan's ESP software. It shows the code reading and the % decode but no beep and no data out the 25 pin port. As soon as you switch to the Terminal window, the reader beeps and outputs the data.

In Continuous read mode, you also have to have the current focal settings in the database or the scanner won't read. The database was designed to be used with a trigger event.

Problems using a VGA splitter for Microscan

To split the signal from the MS Connect, I built a 6 foot long Y cable to connect 2- MS-9's or 820's to the MS Connect. This cable causes the MS Connect to treat the 2 scanners like 1. It works great but the 22 gauge cable with 24 wires is a bear to make. Many companies make a VGA splitter Y cable that is straight thru and combined with a standard Microscan HD15 extension cable seems to do the job. But, thru some hair pulling, the Y cable won't work with 2 MS-9's or and MS-9 and an 820.

Turns out that the VGA splitter cables are only 28 gauge. American Wire Gauge Table shows that a 28 gauge cable can only carry 226 milliamps and you need about 300. My 22 gauge cable will carry over 900. Contact us for more information on this and any other Microscan product.

If you're using a USB keyboard wedge version

may notice a "." at the beginning of the 2nd line of data.

This is the LF from the previous bar code's postamble.
In keyboard wedge mode, configure the postamble to just
be CR and not the default CR LF.

How to integrate a latching/unlatching relay when you are out of inputs

Many of Microscan's bar code scanners and imagers have the ability to have an output latch. The problem comes when you need to unlatch. You need an input to unlatch such as the new master pin or the trigger pin. But chances are, you're already using them for the application. Only the 890 with a wiring box has an extra input. The above picture is of a magnetic latching relay. You can send it a pulse and it will latch. It just requires a toggle switch to the extra coil to reset the relay.

Use output 2 for Noread on the 860

It says it on the spec sheet but it doesn’t make sense. For whatever reason, output 2 can only be used in a noread situation. You can make outputs 1 and 3 fire on a noread but you can’t make output 2 fire on a mismatch or anything other than a noread.

On the Quadrus Mini - you can program it to ignore gaps in your circuit board that would normally give you multiple triggers- Make the time value longer than the time it takes from the leading edge to the gap in the panel. As long as the gap is seen before the trigger filter value time is up then it will keep the trigger active.

How to download an image from Microscan Mini

It took me a bit to figure out our cryptic information, and of course to filter out the stuff that can get you in trouble.

You can use the op,4 command. Here is how you’ll use it:

<op,4,arg> If you are loading a bitmap, just send <op,4> and the entire grayscale image will load.

Since you are concerned about time, I’ll assume you want jpeg. The easiest way to explain the format is to set arg for the full size jpeg image, with adjustable quality:

<op,4,1280x1024_qnnn.jpg>

There is only one variable: nnn is a number from 1 to 100, and it represents the image quality: 1 will upload the fastest, and will be a big grey blob. 100 will be high quality and will take a while to load.

<op,4,1280x1024_q1.jpg> = bad image, quick load time

<op,4,1280x1024_q100.jpg> = good image, long load time

Response format:

The image will load; you will need to write an application that can receive the image, split up the data, and write the file. The first portion of the data is format info, then it moves into image data, so an ASCII Terminal wont work.

The format of the data will be (_ added for readability): SOH_DATALEN_FRAMETYPE_SCHEMA_DATA_CRC

SOH = SOH character

DATALEN = the length of data to follow, 32 bit integer from ‘00000000’ to ‘FFFFFFFF’

FRAMETYPE = 1

SCHEMA = 2

DATA = image data

CRC = CRC16 check digit at the end includes SOH, and everything after (except the CRC, of course)

EZ firmware version 19 cannot disable Unique Item Identifier (UII)

Prior versions can disable/enable the Unique Item Identifier (UII) but not 19 which is the current version shipping.

To fix this you have to go back to rev 18 or wait for rev 20.

How to read RSS Composite with the Quadrus EZ

Since an RSS composite code is made by combining an RSS bar code and a MicroPDF bar code, you’d think you would have to enable them both on the EZ and then under composite have it set to required.

But you actually just enable the RSS and then set composite to required and don’t enable MicroPDF at all.

For speed, put the EZ in fast linear and make sure the code is lined up. Create a 2^nd IP database entry for standard mode just in case it’s not lined up.

Don't Use the Calibration Function with Composite Codes

Using Microscan ESP with the Quadrus EZ is awesome but it’s not perfect. I found that if you’re trying to calibrate the EZ on a composite code, it will disable the “composite required” setting and only enable RSS. So, be sure to enable it afterwards or don’t use it.

Firmware revisions 13 and earlier won’t let you enable the Aux port. You have you use a serial K command to enable it and then save for power on <Z>

Here’s a sample K command to enable the Aux port for half duplex <K101,2> is the command- case sensitive then <Z> to save for power on

How to encode Control Characters into ECC200 Datamatrix using ZPL

Zebra software puts a \& in your code when you hit Ctrl M. This may work for other symbologies but not datamatrix. The ZPL manual is very cryptic and I think incorrect. It makes no mention of using the Hex values of the control characters. The underscore character tells ZPL to start an escape sequence.

You must use the Hex value not Decimal. – Carriage Return is 0D so _0D encodes a carriage return in your datamatrix data string.

How to get a 5th preamble or postamble character

An advantage of Microscan scanners is the ability to have 4 preamble and/or postamble characters added to your data. Most scanners only allow 1 or 2.

What if you need 5 or more?

In the 860, EZ, 880, and the Quadrus Mini you can use the data output formatting function. Insert the characters you need for the preamble, extract the bar code data, and then insert the characters you need for the postamble.

How to set continuous read 1 output to infinite

If you don't use any type of trigger and you only want to get the data from a label 1 time, you can set the read cycle of the Microscan scanner to continuous read 1 output and set the time to an interval where the label should be gone. But what if the label is parked under the laser for a time longer than you specified?

Set the time to 0 seconds and this will be interpretated as infinite. This works on most Microscan scanners. This won't work if all your bar codes are the same because it will think it's the same bar code.

Conifgure the Microscan slave for Daisy Chain

The conditions for a daisy chain application are as

follows:

1. The master reader’s trigger must be Serial or

External; the secondary readers’ triggers are

configured for Serial.

2. All readers are enabled to Daisy Chain

mode.

3. Each reader’s auxiliary port must be connected to the Host port of

its secondary reader.

4. Each secondary reader in the daisy chain must be set to send its

data no less than 20mS before its preceding reader.

5. All but the master reader must have Postamble enabled and set to

CR (^M) only.

6. All but the master reader must have their noread messages disabled.

7. If Multisymbol is enabled, Multisymbol Separator characters

must match in all readers and Number of Symbols must be set to

number large enough to include all the symbols it may itself read

plus the number of symbols that it will be expected to relay to the

host or the next reader up the line.

8. Symbology ID enable/disable must be the same in all readers.

9. All but the master reader must have their diagnostic warning messages

disabled.

10. Daisy Chain ID Status enable/disable and the number of characters

in Daisy Chain ID must be the same in all readers.

Fixed symbol length on the Microscan 860

I ran into a problem today where I had Code 128 enabled on the Microscan 860 the fixed code length enabled and set to 11 characters I also needed code 39 enabled with the fixed code length disabled. The Microscan 860 would not read a 7 character code 39 but would read an 11 character code 39.

As soon as I disabled the fixed code length on Code 128, I was able to read any code 39.

How to use the Microscan 880 as an area scanner

Area scanners are very expensive and are diffucult to maintain and setup.

The Microscan MS880 is such a versatile scanner and can read 5 mil linear bar codes from as far as 20" away.

Use the database and calibrate on the label farthest from the scanner and load the settings into the database. Move the laser to the next bar code and calibrate and add to the database if necessary.

Use the laser framing feature to set the width of the laser and the raster pattern for each bar code. Record the settings.

Use a VB app to send the serial commands to the MS880 to read each bar code.
